H. L. De Mel & Company (Pvt) Ltd. also manages various family Trusts held for charitable purposes. 

Mr. Jacob De Mel and Mrs. Helena De Mel created the ‘Jacob and Helena De Mel Trust’ with the estates ‘Panniyadiya’ and ‘Palliyawatha’ in Chilaw for charitable purposes. Further, through the ‘Ratarankotuwa Estate Trust’, the company conducts various social charitable services for the people of Melsiripura. Also, Ms. Joan De Mel (wife of Bishop Lakdasa De Mel) created the ‘Joan De Mel Trust’, which contributes to various charities throughout Sri Lanka, for causes that are important to the family, from the income generated by several De Mel properties, including the ‘Elsmere’ heritage house at Horton Place built by Sir Henry Lawson De Mel.

Houses for The Homeless 


The Melsiripura ‘Dirijayapura Housing Scheme’ at ‘Panliyadda Watta’ was made possible by the generous donated by the late Mrs. Eileen De Mel in memory of her late husband Mr. R. H. De Mel (former Chairman of the company). The housing project consists of 80 houses, a playground, and a community centre built for 80 low income families in the Kurunegala District.
